What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle yet powerful, holistic, hands-on form of therapy developed by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM after years of clinical research and testing at Michigan State University. There he led a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers where he began to develop and document the effects of CST.   The Upledger Institute states, “CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.”  This craniosacral system has a rhythm which is palpable to CranioSacral Therapists.

Using a light touch (equivalent to about the weight of a nickel), CST practitioners use their awareness of this rhythm to release restrictions in the craniosacral system and to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.  Using CST, the therapist can assist the client in a self-healing process.

Because the craniosacral system nurtures, supports and protects the central and autonomic nervous systems, CST can promote overall health and well being, relief from stress and resistance to disease.  It is, therefore, an excellent form of preventive medicine.  When symptoms are present, CST can alleviate pain and discomfort and promote healing in innumerable conditions.  (See “Who Can Benefit?”)  Because CST is so gentle, anyone from infancy to later years, regardless of health status or history of trauma can participate in and benefit from this profound therapeutic approach.
